I've used this Cafe Rio location several times to cater events, and the results have always been good. They are on time, have the right utensils, etc, and the food is always a crowd pleaser. I've also been here for lunch. The place can get a little crowded and crazy during lunch hour, but the food is good!

Have been there quite a few times and have been satisfied...went there today with my 2 kids & I'll never go back again! When we first walked in, there was already a line waiting to be served and no employees to help them. By the time someone came out to help, they acted like we were bothering them. One employee in particular, wearing a red shirt & no name tag, was EXTREMELY rude! When he was asking what we wanted on our food, he was literally barking at us loudly, as if we were across the restaurant! I have never been treated so horribly in any restaurant in my life! It took everything I had not to cause a scene and bark back at this idiot, because I was LIVID!!! In fact, my 11 year old son asked if he had done something wrong to make they guy mad, as we were walking to the cashier. For these reasons, I will never step foot into this place again, nor will I ever recommend it to anyone! What a group of jerks!!!

I love cafe rio, it's probably one of my favorite places to eat. However, the Great Falls location consistently messes up to go orders - at least in my experience. I have had several meals with the meat incorrect or the meat just left out, the wrong type of beans, or double the beans and no rice. My orders are not 'special' or anything off the menu, so I'm not sure why it is so difficult to get correct, but it seems that the employees here pay much less attention to detail than at the other cafe rios I have been to (and I've been to many others.) I have only gone back to correct my order once because I usually don't know until I am home and it's just too much effort to be worth going back, but even then, they were not very polite or apologetic, when all I wanted was to get the correct type of salad dressing... I'm still giving them two stars because the food is generally fresh and I enjoy the flavors, but this location just does not seem to be up to par compared to other cafe rio locations. I even found bits of plastic packaging or wrap of some sort in my salad this last week.

Good Mexican food for the price. Not quite fast food but not a sit down restaurant either. They always give out larger portions. The food quality is way better than a Taco Bell or Taco Johns.

Tastes like assembly line Mexican food that probably came out of a bag. Oh wait it did.

Decent food for a good price just because we have the military discount. The meats are really decent and I love that they make the tortillas in front of you. Other than that it's just another place like Chipotle but Chipotle is still better to me. It's good for food in this town. HORCHATA IS DELICIOUS! :) oh and it's cool that they have a ton of different hot sauce to try. Oh and the service is good usually but the first time u was there, it was awful.

This is my family's go to place. Friendly staff and great food. The pork tacos are our favorite. Line can be long but it moves fast.

If I was rating on what my kids and I had, 4 easily. My wife's fish taco was very bland. When we travel an hour away to eat the fish taco better be good!!! That said, my burrito was very good and my children liked their corn dogs. When momma's not happy, we're not happy.

Normally would be 4 stars Cuz it's tasty Americanized mexican food. However, the bastards Nickel and dime you for everything damn near. I got lettuce, pico, crispy straws(which all 3 are free with the burrito). And a scoop of sour cream for my to go tacos. $2.29 for a "side salad" wtf? Maybe 50¢ for the sour cream but that's it. Plus they need to stop offering guac, I bet so many people say sure! To find out they get charged later. Bad policy tricking the customer.

Where do I start. First of all I love their sweet pork salad. I have eaten at several locations in various states and this location is terrible. What a shame. Their food is so good but their service is horrible. We have eaten here three times in the last month, each time hoping their terrible service the last time was a fluke but today was their third strike and I am done. The first time their servers were super rude and told us we couldn't have our sour cream inside the burrito? Aren't we the customers? The second time...same horrible service only now they are out of their signature meat - sweet pork and rude employees again. Okay so one last try today. Today the employees weren't rude, just completely and totally out to lunch. There were plenty of employees, but somehow they were out of their ranch dressing and guacamole. After about twenty minutes of my salad sitting getting cold while they rounded up some dressing and guacamole, there was more chaos at the register. Both people running the register had their backs to the customers. I had to ask if anyone was running the register. It is really a shame that this location is so poorly run. I love Cafe Rio's food but I am done giving this location my business.

My wife and I go here at least twice a month. I figured that the place would calm down after the "newness" of the place wore off, but to my amazement this place is still rocking it solid. Lunch hour is definitely busy, but the line moves at a steady pace (15 minutes to get your food during lunch rush). The food is ALWAYS fresh, and they have some wonderful alternative gourmet soft drinks including Horchata (Spiced Rice Milk)!!! The noise environment is loud, and seating is a little scattered, but I believe that's how all Café Rio's are. Pricing for two people including drinks usually runs $20-$25 They also do offer a frequent visitor stamp card good for a free meal, so if you end up going there a lot, ask about the stamp card!

Fast food that feels like a nice Mexican restaurant. The tortillas are freshly made right in front of you, the staff are funny and they seem to love what they do. The chicken burrito enchilada style is my absolute favorite with hot sauce of course. The sweet pork is awesome as well... so are the nachos, be ready for a surprise when you order those. One of my favorite places.

  • Carlos J.

Not too shabby. The sweet shredded pork Burrito was good. The ingredients were fresh, except for the guacamole, which had been sitting a little too long without being stirred.

Love the pot roast beef burrito. The ingredients are always fresh and the staff is friendly.

Love the tacos and enchiladas. We have been here twice and will plan to eat here every time we come to Great Falls.

Was good the first couple of times but last 2 times I went it was flat out poor. Probably not going back anytime soon. Tortillas are fresh but the rest is typical

  • Carl S.

Food was pretty bad. Mom, dad, and I ate here for lunch and none of us enjoyed it. The sauce that they served in the burrito and enchiladas was sweet in a bad way and the quesadilla was soggy.

My whole family loves Cafe Rio in Missoula but this restaurant was not quite as good, not really sure why. On the positive side - fresh, fast, and reasonably priced food. We love the free niño quesadillas. My kids beg for them. The drink selection is vast and delicious too. My 7 year old son and I are huge fans of the basil limeade.

For a Southern California Hispanic, finding decent Mexican food in Montana is a treat. Cafe Rio is ok. Not bad. Not great. Its Ok. They feature fresh hand made tortillas. They offer a variety of meats and sides. Everything is made to order. The place can get busy, especially on Taco Tuesdays when the zig-zag line gets out the door. Ordered 3 chicken tacos. They forgot to ask me what kind of tortilla I wanted. Oh well. They also started to add chopped tomato salsa without even asking, even though I wanted the fresca salsa they have. Added lettuce. Everything else, including cheese is extra. At $7.95 for three tacos, it's already pricy. They were ok. Too much juice, so by the time I got to the third taco, the flour tortilla was soaked through. The tortillas are very fresh...duh. The place is clean. The concrete floor makes it a little noisy. Military discount draws the Air Force personnel. Cheesy decorations. One last thing. The staff call cheese "Kay-so" it's queso....I must be in Montana....lol

When I saw there was a new Mexican restaurant in Great Falls, I couldn't have been more excited. I was not disappointed. I had the tortilla soup and a couple of fish tacos. The soup was absolutely amazing. It was loaded with chicken, fresh vegetables, and even had a scoop of guacamole. Of course it was topped with shredded tortillas. Oh yumm! The fish tacos on the other hand were not up to my standards. Having authentic fish tacos in California my standards are fairly high. These just didn't have great flavor. Rather bland. The service at Cafe Rio was fast and friendly. They have a nice variety of food choices on the menu and the prices are good too. The decor reminds me a bit of Rubios in California with their wooden chairs and openness. It's also set up with the serve yourself beverage station. I can't wait to come back here and try some of the other items. Oh and another order of tortilla soup. Yumm!

Come here a lot for lunch! Great place to get something quick to eat! I always get the sweet pork quesadilla and have always enjoyed it! Mondays is military day, 50% off which is great! I would recommend this place!

One of my local favorites. Fresh food, fast service. I really like the sweet shredded pork. There is a variety of hot sauces available, the bee sting mango passion is awesome, sweet and hot.

As good as it gets...in Great Falls. I normally don't write anything on chain restaurants, but IMHO not all Great Fallsers appreciate a quality place when they see one opening, so... It's a fast-casual place (as opposed to fast food) with awesome salads and other tex mex, plus a respectable soft drink bar. Ordering works basically the same as it does at Subway of Chipotle, where you choose your entree at the counter, then tell the servers which toppings you want while progressing toward the register. . Overall, Cafe Rio is much-needed option for clean tex-mex in a city where you would otherwise be stuck choosing between Toxic Smell or a greasy, run-down mexican joint. Give the Tres Leches a shot for dessert sometime--you won't be disappointed.

This place has a busy lunch hour but moves people through quickly, a very good thing. The food is average, with a notable bright spot. I like a healthy lunch option because I don't want to feel sleepy in the afternoon. The secret is moderate to reduced carbs (a lot of science supports this, which you probably don't care to read here, but it boils down to blood sugar levels and carbs raise blood sugar and what goes up must go down). Cafe Rio is not an easy place to eat for low carbs, and the main reason is the delicious homemade tortilla. I ordered the salad, which is made with the tortilla as a bed for the rest of the salad. It is irresistible and worth eating. My salad had the sweet carnitas meat, which I found to be far too sweet for my taste. I found the preparation to be odd: lettuce goes on top. Toppings are fairly limited as well. Lettuce, pico de gallo and guacamole are the only vegetable options. Another of my party had a burrito, which was massive. If that is your thing, bring your appetite. In sum, I give the place a very modest rating for salad creativity and content but highest possible rating for tortillas.

Delicious, handmade Mexican meals. The tortillas are great, and I absolutely love their steak tacos! I definitely recommend getting a punchcard here if you love Mexican food!

I thought it was pretty dang goood! It was a little pricey, but this is the first place I've had quesadillas as good as when I was in Mexico and ate at one of those little carts on the street. The drinks were good. The decor was cool, and the setting is kind of cool at night, being up a little over the "hustle and bustle" of the busy city street :). I had a problem with the bathrooms too. It's a single person bathroom and ended up having to wait 15+ minutes to go during a busy lunch hour. I mean C'mon, the place can probably hold 40-50 people, you need more than 1 bathroom. Other than the bathroom and a little bit the price, I thought it was awesome. Look out Taco Treat... ps. I noticed a few Mexcican workers, so maybe they brought back the trainers?? March 2012: I ate hear again and had the nachos. NOT GOOD! The chips were bland and horrible. Not much on it either for flavor. Stick to the items that have the tortillas!

I'm just a white guy that has a taste for Mexican-like food. No Pro here, but I thought this place was great. Our table had three burritos and a nachos. Everyone love it. Two of us were Rio virgins, me being one of them. The steak could use a little more flavor, but the rest of the choices made up for it in fresh flavors. They had some great choices on bottled heat too! We all were extremely full when left, maybe a little too much so. I just had to finish my burrito. Prices were average for a Mexican food. Maybe we got there at the right time, no line and the staff was very patient for me to make my decisions. Way too many choices! ha ha

Cafe Rio opened recently.. we were home for a visit and friends asked us to go. I love the decor, I really like the way they decorated the table and chairs.I found it odd that the tables were bolted to the floor when we tried to move them.-there were 7 of us and we had a terrible time squeezing around a table so we could eat together. We were greeted by a pleasant lady, advised of specials and then went to place our order. They make the tortillas behind glass so you can watch. While we were there every time someone ordered nachos, employees sang and whooped it up-a nacho cheer. reminded me of the Walmart pep talks. I got the runs withing 3 minutes of eating-only to find out the ladies toilet is a single seater with a wait to get in-I ended up darting into the men's toilet to take a crap.. thought I was giving birth! I would say it was just me except another in our party had similar reaction. Another couldn't finish her lunch because she thought it tasted bad. Our talk ranged from: it's OK to I see no reason to come here again. I noticed Cafe Rio had a good review on here and I caution you to GO and see for yourself..keep an open mind. Give the place a chance. . The drinks were good and customer service was fine. They don't take paper checks-my elderly friend who has a check book got her lunch for free because of that. new age...gotta have plastic I guess. I wish them well!!

Just can't get enough of the tortilla soup! It's half soup half amazing!! :) Also a fav is the salmon tacos when they have them! Delicious!! Anything with the sweet pork is good too. It's a noisy place, especially when someone orders NACHOS or EXTRA MEAT...(you'll understand when you hear it) so if you're looking for somewhere quiet, you might want to take it to go!

overrated am not going back here. I was so pissed at myself for spending 38.00 for me and 2 kids save your money and create your own beautiful better food at home. The salsas all tasted the same, the pork meat was sweet and eww. I have to face it Great Falls has no decent restaurants!

Stands out among the other competition in great falls for sure. Fresh tortillas, good salsa. Taco Tuesday is a hard deal to beat.

I have been back to Cafe Rio multiple times since my last update and am pleased to say service speed has improved. However, there was an occurrence they took my order too early and my food sat there for a few minutes. The next time I went back I told them I'd order when I was in front of them so that my food wouldn't get cold.

Not bad. Fresh tortillas and a bright open dining room

  • Cameron M.

I would just say good for Great Falls, but it's good anywhere you go. Of course it's not like a sit down authentic mexican restaurant like back in Texas but it's awesome for what it is. Give it a try

  • Wayne F.

Ok, so I am used to authentic Mexican food, and this was more Tex-Mex. I liked the fresh tortillas, but we were rushed through the line, minus one star for that. I had a smothered steak burrito, and the enchilada sauce was sweet, not spicy which was disappointing to say the least. The salsa was also not spicy, and that goes for the pico de gallo too. The place had posters advertising their tamales, but there aren't any on the menu. The place was ok in my book, perhaps we will try it again sometime, but better to go a block further and go to Tacos en Jalisco for now. Advice to management, slow it down and concentrate on quality.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
